The grand, long-awaited, opening ceremony concert celebrates the opening of the Moomin Museum. At the same time, we are celebrating the birthday of Tove Jansson, the mother of the Moomins. The show takes you on a journey to the world of Tove Jansson where the humane and wise texts, and the expressive and powerful illustrations merge as one.
A composition by Janne Valtonen, based on Tove Jansson’s book “Tales from Moominvalley”, premiers at the concert. The piece was commissioned by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and will be led by Chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Valtonen has chosen five novellas from Tove Jansson’s collection of short stories as inspiration for the music.
Performing on the stage are: vocalists Maria Ylipää, Nelli Nyman, Tero Harjunniemi, Kristian Lindroos, dancer Minna Tervamäki, and Pirkanpojat Boys’ Choir. Actress Armi Toivanen, and actor Jarmo Koski will narrate the show and lead you through the chosen short stories of Tove Jansson.
– We have collected excerpts from Tove Jansson’s writings where her artistic personality and the unique atmosphere of the Moomin books are exemplified. The humane, open-minded philosophy of the Moomins that supports individuality and puts emphasis on a close-nit family still attracts interest from all around the world and from generation to generation, states director and playwright of the opening ceremony concert, Marika Vapaavuori.
The concert is subtitled in English.
