The YL Male Choir (Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat) are a well-known institution in Finland, and a distinguished guest abroad. This choir is the oldest Finnish male choir, founded in 1883, and thus an essential part of Finnish vocal music history. Their performances are always known as a skillful combination of old and new. The Artistic Director of the choir is Pasi Hyökki.
In this concert, the choir focuses on combining two artists, both named Leevi, of very different eras and genres: on composer Leevi Madetoja as well as on the rock band Leevi and the Leavings. Madetoja was also known as a music critic, conductor and music teacher, recognized as one of the most significant Finnish contemporaries of Jean Sibelius, under whom he studied privately. Leevi and the Leavings, lead by Gösta Sundqvist and his timeless hits, was a renowned Finnish rock line-up established in the late 1970’s and active until 2003. Despite their great success, this band was famous for never performing live.
Duration: 2 hours (including intermission)
