“The album Tenor Madness (1956) contains the only known recording featuring both of the legendary tenor saxophonists Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane.” 

The star soloist of the evening, tenor saxophonist Manuel Dunkel (born 1971, Vantaa), is one of the most respected Finnish jazz musicians currently active. He is known for his rich sound, virtuosity and strong post-bop expression. In 2011, the Finnish Jazz Federation awarded Dunkel with the Yrjö Award.

HT Combo (founded 2012, Tampere) is a ten-player miniature big band focused on swing. The group is made up of six wind players and a rhythm section. While rare in Finland, this sort of configuration is common in many places, especially the West Coast of the United States. HT Combo has performed at almost 100 themed concerts across the country, together with many famous Finnish vocalists and jazz musicians.

The Tenor Madness concert’s programme includes several pieces composed and made famous by the legendary tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, chosen by Manuel Dunkel and the orchestra. Some of the most famous pieces include “Tenor Madness”, “Doxy” and “St. Thomas”. The programme also includes pieces such as “Shiny Stockings”, “Sugar”, “Just Friends” and the Beatles song “Here, There and Everywhere”.

The event is approximately two hours long, including an intermission.
