W.A. Mozart: Magic Flute

Mozart’s Magic Flute returns to Tampere Opera in 2022 – Popular production features Tuuli Takala and Tuomas Katajala as its power couple

The Tampere Opera introduces Mozart’s Magic Flute as its 2022 production. The most beloved and most popular work in the 74-year history of the opera house, which premiered in Tampere Hall in 2011, now makes a comeback with new casting. The date of the new premiere is March 2, 2022.  Soprano Tuuli Takala and tenor Tuomas Katajala dazzle in the lead roles, and director Tuomas Parkkinen takes control of the production again. There are altogether six performances.

Takala, Katajala and Parkkinen have worked together before, and their latest collaboration Veljeni vartija (My Brother’s Keeper, 2018) received lots of praise. Tuomas Parkkinen’s direction of the Finnish opera, which portrayed the dramatic events of the Finnish civil war in 1918, featured Takala and Katajala as the lead couple.

– Tuuli Takala and Tuomas Katajala are among the most talented singers of their generation. They are Finnish world-class stars. The current piece we are working on is a lot happier than the full-bodied drama about the civil war, says Parkkinen.

For Parkkinen, the Magic Flute’s unique character stems from the opera’s endless child-like inventiveness, a profusion of characters and events, elements of magical fantasy, and Mozart’s ingenious music. The director has got a couple of surprises in store for the 2022 production of the Magic Flute.

– We have updated the work to an extent. The new soloists bring a new rhythm and pace to the direction. Already in 2011, the stage was filled with glitter, elements of entertainment, and stunning magic tricks, Parkkinen continues.

Risto Joost, who is conducting his first opera in Tampere, leads the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. The Tampere Opera Choir is trained by Choir Conductor Heikki Liimola. The casting of young singers for the children’s roles in the production is set to begin in autumn 2021.

– Everyone loves The Magic Flute, its magic and humour. It is a work well suited for the inexperienced opera-goer, and it keeps even seasoned classical music enthusiasts entertained, says Parkkinen.

Set design will be updated by Tinde Lappalainen, making use of the plans of Kati Lukka. Elina Vättö reproduces Tarja Simonen’s original costume design, and Ville Syrjä is responsible for lighting design. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Risto Joost, who is conducting his first piece at the Tampere Opera. The language of the performance is Finnish, with surtitles in Finnish and in English.

Tickets for the opera can be purchased at the ticket office of Tampere Hall or through the Lippu.fi website. There are altogether six performances.

The Tampere Opera was founded in 1946, and the company’s first production was Leevi Madetoja’s Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians) in 1947. In its operation, the company relies on guest performers and collaborates with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Tampere Opera Choir. Annual large-scale productions performed in the Tampere Hall are the highlight of the spring, and they usually draw an audience of 10,000 people. The year 2020 marked the 74th birthday and the 127th premiere of the company as the production of Carmen was performed. In 2022, the Magic Flute will continue the tradition as the 128th premiere of the opera house. The Tampere Opera is one of the oldest opera companies in Finland, along with The Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
