Music from an Ancient Land
“My hope is to bring a little bit of the land to future musicians through this piece.” -Tanya Tagac
In a concert drawing on the connection to nature, Uusinta Ensemble will have as its soloist Sámi artist Ánnámáret, whose collaboration with Spanish-Finnish composer Jaime Belmonte has led to the peaceful creative union of Western contemporary music and yoik art called Ráidu. Ánnámáret will also yoik her own pieces as a soloist. Tanya Tagac, a vocal and electronic music artist who comes from the Inuit culture of Canada, composed her work Sivunittinni, originally performed with throat singing. The premiere of the concert will be performed by Jouni Hirvelä, whose new work is related to Gagaku, old Japanese court music – the earliest form of orchestral music. The work echoes the static sound of the Sho organ used in Gagaku, which can be heard as a metaphor for the merging of mind and nature.
Programme:
Jouni Hirvelä: Hohka (fp)
Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman: Yoik solos
Tanya Tagaq: Sivunittinni
Jaime Belmonte-Caparrós / Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman: Raidu
Production: Tampere Music Festivals, Tampere Biennale
