The movie and the director
Miloš Forman (1932–2018) was a Czech–American film director, screenwriter, and actor who rose to international prominence in the 1960s as part of the Czechoslovak New Wave. His early films, including those now screened in Tampere, are ironic comedies about everyday life and society. During his career, Forman won, among other honors, two Academy Awards for Best Director (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975; Amadeus, 1984).

Palaa, palaa! (1967) is one of Miloš Forman’s most popular and controversial Czechoslovak films. Set almost entirely during a single firemen’s ball, this tragicomedy is built from episodic scenes employing a documentary-like style, revealing a sharp portrait of a small-town petty-bourgeois community. At the time of its release, the film provoked official criticism over its portrayal of firefighters, even though the true satirical target was society at large. The reception reflected the political climate of the era more than the filmmakers’ intentions, and the film has since been recognized as a compassionate yet unsparing social satire. The Palaa, palaa! achieved international success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1969.
