The movie and director

Jan Senius (b. 1979) is a Czech–Finnish film director, screenwriter, and editor who lives and works in Prague. Salmiakkikarkki, the indie film screened at the Metsäkansa Film Festival, is his most recent feature. Piano at the Crossroads is, in the director’s own words, a “silent music film,” shot on the empty streets of Prague during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Senius has directed and produced the short films Lucy Leaves Tomorrow and In the Cinema. A recurring theme in his work is loneliness among people.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jakub is forced to close his piano shop and cancel the evening concerts held there. In the deserted store, an idea emerges. A magnificent concert grand piano has been temporarily placed in an empty church in the heart of the Old Town. Jakub sets out to roam the silent city to find pianists and invite them to the church to play.

The film is a sensitive portrait of a time marked by movement restrictions and curfews, in which music becomes a source of hope and meaning, leaving the viewer to reflect on art’s ability to illuminate darkness.
