TampereRaw’s new concert series makes contemporary music accessible at Tampere Hall

The contemporary music ensemble TampereRaw and Tampere Hall are launching a new concert series titled Ajan ääni (“The Sound of Now”). The series will feature themed concerts of new music held at Tampere Hall, accompanied by low-threshold side events and free performances. Each concert will include a world premiere commissioned for the occasion and introduce audiences to the latest directions in contemporary music.

The first concert in the series, Pathways, will take place in Tampere Hall’s Small Auditorium on Wednesday, 19 November 2025. Designed by composer Maija Hynninen, the concert draws inspiration from nature and the human relationship with it, presenting Hynninen’s compositions from various stages of her career.

At the artistic core of the concert are Hynninen’s works exploring ecological sustainability and humanity’s role in the cycle of nature. The evening’s programme includes one world premiere and several works previously unperformed in Finland, which have already gained international recognition.

“I’m thrilled to present in Finland the works that have been performed abroad, and to contribute my own voice to the Finnish music scene. I hope this concert will help my music take deeper root here. The evening celebrates and brings together my career so far as a composer. Through this collaboration with TampereRaw, I also wish to promote geographical diversity within the contemporary music field,” says Maija Hynninen.

The commissioned world premiere Pathways (2024), written for piano and chamber ensemble, contemplates the fading beauty of the urban world. The first part of the work was performed by TampereRaw and pianist Anna Kuvaja at Tampere Hall in autumn 2024, but the concert will now feature the complete piece for the first time.

“The works in the universe everything is a circle and Island share a connection: I composed both during the COVID-19 lockdown. These pieces convey a gradual turning inward to one’s inner world during that time – a process that becomes the second major theme of the concert,” Hynninen reflects.

Before the concert, a discussion event will be held in Tampere Hall’s foyer at 6 p.m., focusing on the role and potential of art in a changing future society.

The panel includes composer-writer Osmo Tapio Räihälä, Director of the Open Campus at the University of the Arts Helsinki Anu Lampela, Director of Research and Development at the University of Vaasa Jan Segerstam, and Deputy Mayor of Tampere Anne-Mari Jussila. The discussion will be moderated by Anna Angervo, TampereRaw’s Artistic Director and Producer.

As part of the concert, Tampere Hall’s Winter Garden will also host visual artist Eero Tiittula’s exhibition Hengitys (“Breath”).

The concert duration is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, including an intermission. The programme is subject to change.
