“Behold: from the mist of the swamp, from the glow of fire, a spell rises… a story unfolds…”
Finlandia Prize-winning author and theatre director Juha Hurme, composer-singer Aleksi Parviainen, and pianist Marie Körkkö join forces in a unique lecture concert blending music and storytelling to honour the life and work of Finland’s national author Aleksis Kivi.
Aleksis Kivi (1834–1872) was a remarkably prolific writer who also suffered from severe mental health issues throughout his life. His deeply human life story, paired with his richly inspiring literary work, serves as the foundation for this moving performance that weaves together narration and music.
“Soiva Kivi” (The Sounding Stone) premiered at Kanneltalo in Helsinki on Kivi’s 190th birthday, 10 October 2024 — also World Mental Health Day. Now, this special production comes to Tampere Hall for the first time.
The concert features Juha Hurme’s insightful lecture intertwined with music by three composers:
- Steinklang (2024), an a cappella song cycle composed and performed by Aleksi Parviainen, offers a modern interpretation of Kivi’s poetry.
- Näkyjä Impivaarasta (2024), a solo piano suite by Marie Körkkö, is inspired by Kivi’s classic novel Seven Brothers.
- The evening concludes with a rare performance of Four Songs from the Opera Aleksis Kivi (1996) by Einojuhani Rautavaara, interpreted by Parviainen and Körkkö.

Enjoy a buffet-style selection featuring, among other delights, locally produced cheeses, cold cuts, and mouth-watering marinated treats. Special dietary requirements are accommodated based on advance notice at the time of booking. A pre-booked seat at the antipasto table served before the performance €22.90. The table is set 1.5 hours before the performance begins on the 3rd floor of Tampere Hall. There is a bar in the space where drinks can be ordered on the spot.
