In Landscapes of the Mind, the minimalist colour palette of the works reflects thoughts and emotions that the artist has contemplated and experienced over a long period of time. The artworks evoke distant memories while also inspiring reflections on the present moment. These thoughts and feelings take shape as images whose simplicity creates a powerful overall impression. Through their quietness, the works invite viewers to pause and reflect.
For Marianne Palonen, white is a powerful colour that deepens and enhances other shades. It is particularly associated with the harmony of northern landscapes and winter nature, but it also lends itself naturally to depictions of inner landscapes and spirit animals.
Studies of nature, spirit animals, mandalas, and landscapes of the mind are among Palonen’s favourite subjects. Her continuous experimentation with materials, combined with the minimalist and light-toned harmonious expression developed in recent years, is strongly evident in her nature studies and portrayals of inner landscapes. In some works, light is accentuated through the use of silver leaf, while in others, genuine stone pigments anchor the artwork to nature or the landscape of the mind.
