Game On – explore the history and present of video games through play!

This summer, visitors to Tampere Hall have a great opportunity to explore the world of video games in the Game On summer exhibition, presented by Tampere Live in collaboration with the Barbican Centre and the City of London Corporation. The exhibition is open in Tampere Hall’s Sorsapuistosali daily from 27 June to 9 August 2026.

Game On arrives in Finland for the first time in this form. Over the years, the exhibition has been shown in 44 venues across 28 countries. In total, more than four million visitors have attended the exhibition.

What was the very first game ever made? What kind of devices were used for gaming in the 1980s? What might gaming look like in the future? You’ll find answers to these and many other questions at the Game On summer exhibition.

The exhibition area features more than 100 different games. Visitors can try and play all of them themselves. Instructions for each game are provided next to the game. In addition, a staff member is present in the exhibition area every day to assist with the games if needed. Please be considerate of other players and avoid occupying a single game for an unreasonably long time. Please also note that there may occasionally be queues for the most popular games.

“We are excited to bring this internationally successful exhibition to Tampere Hall. The exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the history and present of gaming – and above all the opportunity to experience and play the games yourself. Today, gaming culture has a strong social and community-building role, bringing people together, and this is wonderfully reflected in an exhibition suitable for the whole family. We look forward to an active and experiential Game On summer,” says Suvi Leinonen, Business Director at Tampere Live.

The games have been grouped thematically into their own sectors

The Game On exhibition area is divided into eleven different sectors, each with its own theme focusing on a particular aspect of gaming. The full exhibition experience does not require visiting the sectors in any specific order; visitors are free to explore whichever sectors they wish and in any order they prefer.

At the exhibition, visitors can also explore the history of games through various collections. Photo from the Game On exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland.

“We are extremely excited about our collaboration with Tampere Hall and about bringing the Game On exhibition to Tampere this summer. It is a completely unique exhibition experience — the playable history of video games. The exhibition features more than 100 playable games that help illustrate the remarkable technical and creative development of the games industry over the past 60 years,” says Patrick Moran, Head of Commercial Strategy and Partnerships at the Barbican Immersive Department from the Barbican Centre.

“The exhibition includes iconic game franchises such as Mario, Halo and Space Invaders. It also features rare and unique games that are difficult to find elsewhere. We are also very much looking forward to the opportunity to deepen the exhibition by exploring the history of the Finnish games industry and highlighting the significant contribution of Finnish game developers, from the Amiga demoscene of the 1980s to the global phenomenon Angry Birds. Finland is a pioneer in the games industry, and we want to showcase this as part of the Game On exhibition. We look forward to audiences experiencing an exhibition that recognises the games industry as one of the most important creative industries of our time,” he continues.

FAQ

  • Can I exchange or refund my ticket, for example due to illness?
All ticket orders are binding and final from the moment of purchase and cannot be exchanged or refunded.
  • Can I change the date of my date-specific ticket?
Unfortunately, the visit date of a date-specific ticket cannot be changed later. If you are unsure about the timing of your visit, we recommend purchasing an open-date ticket.
  • Can I enter on the day of my choice with an open-date ticket purchased in advance?
Yes, but for safety reasons we can only allow a limited number of people in Sorsapuistosali at a time, so a queue may occasionally form at the exhibition entrance.
  • How much time should I reserve for the experience?
An admission ticket allows a two-hour visit to the exhibition area, which is generally enough time to explore the area and try the games. If you would like to stay longer, we recommend purchasing a day ticket, which allows you to remain in the exhibition area for the entire day during opening hours.
  • Is there a shop at the exhibition?
Yes! Welcome to visit our charming pop-up shop, where you will find unique products inspired by the world of gaming.
  • Can I visit the shop without an exhibition ticket?
Yes! The Gamer Shop is located outside the exhibition area, so you can come shopping even without an exhibition ticket.
  • Is the exhibition suitable for children?
Yes, the exhibition is intended for visitors of all ages and there is no age limit. Children under 4 years of age are admitted free of charge.
