The Opening Concert of Tampere Chamber Music Festival Celebrates Mozart
“Anniversary years make us look back and remember. In 1976, when I was ten years old, my first piano teacher, Dmitry Hintze, gave me the sheet music for Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488, as a Christmas present. A little over a year later, I had the opportunity to perform the concerto as a soloist with the Jyväskylä City Orchestra. The event was unforgettable – to feel the heartfelt beauty, sensitivity, and vitality of Mozart’s music, supported and enriched by the orchestra’s warm sound. In a way, it was my first encounter with chamber music – I was able to communicate with the orchestra. I still remember the smiling, kind faces of the musicians and the wonderful orchestral interludes. A couple of years later, I performed the F major concerto, K. 459, with the same orchestra. These works have left a deep imprint on me, both as experiences and in a physical sense.
Throughout my life, I have found myself playing them in my mind and with my fingers. The harmonies and melodies have stayed not only in my emotional memory but also deeply ingrained in my musical mind. How remarkable a child’s memory is, and how powerfully it imprints itself in the brain. These reflections have stayed with me and were one of the key reasons for founding the festival. The rich dialogue between art and science helps us understand—also through scientific means—what music can give to a person and how it affects us throughout our entire lives. Making music and finding inspiration together enhance children’s well-being and support them through life.
When planning this anniversary year, the idea of the TCM Sinfonietta was born—a project where young musicians, together with the festival’s artists and conductor, can experience something profoundly meaningful and create lasting memories. When I founded the festival in 2017, my goal was to create opportunities to bring music to young people as a source of well-being and clarity of values, so that a musician could transform challenges—whether emotional or physical—into strengths and naturally find ways to overcome obstacles.
The concert venue, Tampere University Festive Hall, wonderfully reinforces the delightful possibility of experiencing the cross-pollination of art and science.
Warmly welcome!”
