Nocturnal piano music at Tampere Hall

A gentle shimmer of silence and colour, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. Pianist Ville Hautakangas leads the listener through the many shades of night – from tranquil dreamscapes to the hour of the wolf.

The concert begins and ends with the delicate luminosity of Erik Satie (1866–1925). His music flows like a moonlit bridge across the evening – sometimes pausing, sometimes gently rippling – framing new Finnish piano works, including four world premieres. The compositions have been commissioned by Ville Hautakangas with the support of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) and Teosto.

Artists Inka Hannula and Teemu Raudaskoski will create a painting inspired by the music during the performance. The artwork will be auctioned in the days following the concert on their joint Instagram account (@hannularaudaskoski). A photo of the finished painting will be posted there, and bids can be made in the comments section.

The concert is part of the Tampere Biennale programme, taking place from 15 to 19 April 2026. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the festival, founded by composer Usko Meriläinen as a celebration of Finnish contemporary music.
