A breathtakingly skilled Japanese drumming ensemble captivates with sheer power
YAMATO – The Drummers of Japan, one of the world’s most renowned Japanese drumming groups, has mesmerised more than eight million spectators in 55 countries with its spectacular performances. In 2024, YAMATO performed to sold-out audiences in Kuopio, Lahti, and Helsinki. Now the group returns to Finland, bringing centuries-old Japanese taiko drumming to Tampere for the very first time. YAMATO will perform its new production Hito no Chikara – The Power of Human Strength at Tampere Hall on Sunday, 1 November 2026.
On stage, audiences will hear more than forty unique, traditional taiko drums, each with its own distinct character. The largest of them, the 500-kilogram Odaiko drum, measures nearly two metres in diameter and is crafted from a massive tree over 400 years old.
These magnificent taiko drums demand exceptional skill from their players. YAMATO’s highly trained and masterful drummers do not merely strike the drums with explosive force — they draw out rich, nuanced tones. Audiences are treated to a meticulously refined soundscape, powerful music, breathtaking choreography, and the performers’ unshakable sense of unity. The experience is more than music; it is physical energy — at times fierce, at times delicate.
YAMATO’s new production Hito no Chikara – The Power of Human Strength challenges a world transformed by technology by asking: what in us remains uniquely human? With every strike of the drum, the performers embody human resilience, passion, and the heartbeat we all share. Hito no Chikara invites audiences to feel the pulse of humanity and to celebrate the strength that lives within us all.
Authentic Japanese drumming continues to receive standing ovations around the world year after year. This immersive show will delight all lovers of Japanese music and culture.
Programme subject to change.
