The long-established State Opera Varna Ballet brings Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake to Finland
Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake comes to Finland performed by State Opera Varna Ballet, founded in 1947. Presented in six Finnish cities, the ballet features a choreographic adaptation by Sergei Bobrov, whose interpretation preserves the work’s original spirit and highlights the importance of Tchaikovsky’s music to its story and characters.
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake premiered at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1877. Its enduring status as a classic owes much to the choreography created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1895. More than a century after its composition, many still consider it the world’s most beautiful ballet. Swan Lake tells a story of love and the eternal struggle between light and darkness, symbolised by the ballet’s black and white swans.
Sergei Bobrov’s staging for State Opera Varna Ballet draws on the work’s classical tradition, restoring elements of its original score, libretto and choreography. Throughout, Bobrov has sought to preserve the dramatic significance of Tchaikovsky’s music and the work’s original spirit.
Prince Siegfried is danced by Ukrainian Danylo Motkov, who, at just 20 years old, has already performed numerous leading roles on State Opera Varna Ballet’s international tours across Europe. The roles of Odette and Odile are performed by the German dancer and multiple award winner Florentina Truempler. Bulgarian Pavel Kirchev dances the role of the feared sorcerer Rothbart.
The production will visit Hyvinkää, Helsinki, Tampere, Pori, Oulu and Kuhmo in January. Tickets go on sale on Friday 9 October at 10 am. Founded in 1947, State Opera Varna is a long-established Bulgarian opera and ballet company. Its repertoire includes opera, ballet, operetta and musicals. To date, State Opera Varna has produced over 200 stage works and given nearly 8,000 performances, reaching a total audience of almost 3.5 million.
