Welcome to a lecture on the effects of music throughout the human lifespan.
The topic will be presented by Professor of Neurology and specialist physician Seppo Soinila, who serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurology at the University of Turku and as a research doctor at Turku University Hospital (Tyks). Soinila has studied the effects of music in the treatment and rehabilitation of brain disorders for 25 years.

“Music played in childhood – especially music that evokes emotions and inspires – remains in long-term memory and brings back not only the music itself but also the events associated with it. The simultaneous activation of different parts of the brain improves concentration and enhances memory.

Music heals, creates wellbeing, increases a sense of community and interaction, and provides emotional experiences. What short- and long-term effects does music have, and how does what we experience in childhood influence us later in life?

The results show that daily music listening significantly enhances recovery after a stroke, improves cognitive functioning in people with memory disorders, and reduces neuropsychiatric symptoms. Music alleviates pain and illness-related depression. It also lightens the burden on caregivers. A new study now underway examines the rehabilitation potential of new music technology, using tools such as virtual concerts. The positive effects of music may begin even before birth. They continue throughout life and serve as a health-promoting resource in old age.”

The duration of the lecture is approx. 45 min.
