Privilege to be part of the ceremonial conferment of University of Tampere
A tradition stretching back several centuries, the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees is the highest and most prestigious academic celebration. “Promootio”, the Finnish word for conferment, comes from the Latin verb “promovere”, which means promotion, advancement and elevation. The purpose of the conferment ceremony is to highlight the value of and respect for research and education. It is also an important milestone in an academic’s career.
The conferment celebrations include a number of events arranged over three days on 16.-18th of August 2018. Tampere Hall was proud to be selected as a festive dinner and seminar venue for the event. This year was especially important because in 2018 the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees was a joint event for doctors and doctors honoris causae from all six faculties of the University of Tampere. The conferment ceremony was the last one organised by the University of Tampere in its present form. Due to a merger, the name of the university will change to Tampere University on 1 January 2019.
We asked the Chair of Conferment Committee and the event organiser Päivi Åstedt-Kurki, what kind of memories she gained after the event.
– Everything went really well and even the last days of summer were beautiful during the event days. I have good memories and the topmost feelings are gratitude and respect for University of Tampere and the work we have done. I feel happy after this great event.
Tampere Hall as a venue provider and University of Tampere have a long history together when it comes to the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees.
– We have worked together for many years in different events. In 2000 the whole conferment was organised in Tampere Hall. We have been happy with the cooperation, Tampere Hall is a reliable and excellent partner. They have stylish and functional venues, aesthetic environment, high-quality technics and a nice warm atmosphere with really friendly service despite of the building size.
Tampere Hall congratulates all the new doctors and doctors honoris causae! We wish to thank University of Tampere for all of these years together, it has been a true pleasure to be a part of the great conferment tradition.
