Timeless Paths – Heikki Sarmanto’s Settings of Eino Leino’s Poetry
Timeless Paths is a unique concert of many moods, bringing together the immortal verse of Finnish master poet Eino Leino and the unforgettable compositions of internationally acclaimed jazz pioneer Heikki Sarmanto. In this performance, Leino’s bohemian and timeless poems come alive in an entirely new, lyrical and exhilaratingly energetic way through the interpretations of vocal virtuoso Juki Välipakka.
Taking to the stage are composer and pianist Heikki Sarmanto, one of Finland’s most respected jazz pioneers, and singer Juki Välipakka, known for his magically nuanced vocal expression. The stories within the songs form a timeless path through the full spectrum of human emotion.
The concert is part of the release tour for the album Ajaton – Timeless (Alba Records).
Poetry and Music
Eino Leino’s poems have shaped the Finnish soul for generations, and Heikki Sarmanto’s compositions give them a profound new dimension. In Timeless Paths, these classic poems serve as more than song lyrics: they engage in an intense dialogue with the music as equal partners.
The performance takes listeners along life’s many paths, exploring profound human emotions, love and longing, the bohemian life of the artist and timeless observations on society.
Performers:
Heikki Sarmanto (composer and pianist): A pioneer of Finnish jazz and an internationally awarded master. Sarmanto is known for his sensitive, lyrical touch and his ability to blend modern jazz, classical form and Finnish melancholy into a seamless whole.
Juki Välipakka (singer): A seasoned professional named Male Vocalist of the Year by Jazzrytmit magazine. Välipakka’s airy, nuanced vocal expression ranges from delicate interpretations of poetry to virtuosic, spontaneous scat improvisation and throat singing.

Enjoy a buffet-style selection featuring, among other delights, locally produced cheeses, cold cuts, and mouth-watering marinated treats. Special dietary requirements are accommodated based on advance notice at the time of booking. A pre-booked seat at the antipasto table served before the performance €22.90. The table is set 1.5 hours before the performance begins on the 3rd floor of Tampere Hall. There is a bar in the space where drinks can be ordered on the spot.
