Described as the “voice of tango in the 21st century” and the “best voice of Buenos Aires”, Martín Alvarado is one of Argentina’s most prominent contemporary tango singers and one of the finest vocalists in the history of tango. He has performed on various stages and on TV in Europe, Asia, and South America. In 2013, he won a Latin UK Award prize for his concert and had his last album released by UK based record label Riverboat Records. Buenos Aires’ tango radios play tracks from Alvarado’s four albums daily, and his voice and stage charisma have been compared to the great tango superstar of the 1930’s, Carlos Gardel.
The collaboration between Alvarado and Finnish Nuevo Quinteto Otra Vez band represents so-called “nuevo tango”, a new wave of tango music. Following Astor Piazzolla, they boldly combine traditional tango lyrics with modern harmonies, swingy rhythms, and improvisation.
Alvarado and NQOV are set to release their second album next March, to coincide with their tour in Finland. The album was recorded in Buenos Aires last year, and it features both older Argentinean and Finnish tangos and new works by Fabion Bertero and Matti Laukkanen.
Nuevo Quinteto Otra Vez members are Antti Heerman (violin), Henrik Sandås (bandoneon), Matti Laukkanen (piano), Jere Haakana (electric guitar), and Petri Mäkiharju (double bass).
