World-class soprano sings Wagner and Kilpinen accompanied by pianist Ilkka Paananen
One of Finland’s most internationally renowned sopranos, Soile Isokoski, is accompanied by pianist Ilkka Paananen in this concert which features Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Kilpinen’s Tunturilauluja (Songs of the Fells), Duparc’s songs and Peterson-Berger op 5 (fyra sånger).
Soile Isokoski studied at Sibelius Academy and gave her first concert in 1986. In 1987, she won the Lappeenranta Singing Competition, was the runner-up of BBC Singer of the World and winner of the Elly Ameling Competition and the Tokyo International Singing Competition. She has successfully performed in the State Operas of Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin and Bavaria, La Scala in Milan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, Covent Garden in London and the Metropolitan in New York. In addition, she has regularly visited several international music festivals, for instance, Salzburg, Savonlinna, Edinburgh and Orange and co-operated with numerous notable conductors.
Soile Isokoski’s concert repertoire is extensive. She has recorded the works of several Finnish and Nordic composers as well as those of Schubert, Schumann and Richard Strauss. In addition, Soile Isokoski has recorded several opera and oratorio albums. Her recording of Richard Strauss’ Orchestral Songs Ondine with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski received the esteemed Gramophone Editor’s Choice Award in 2002.
Ilkka Paananen studied the piano at the Kuopio Conservatory under Jarmo Räty, at Sibelius Academy under Eero Heinonen and in London under Phyllis Sellick. He has complemented his studies in master classes with Dmitri Bashkirov, Ralf Gothóni and Dalton Baldwin, among others, as his teachers. Ilkka Paananen won the first prize of the Maj Lind Piano Competition in 1982, and in 1985 he was awarded the prize of the Danish Sonning Music Foundation.
In addition to Finland, he performs in many European countries, the Far East and the United States. As a Lied pianist, Paananen is known for his co-operation with Dilbér, Elina Garanča, Jorma Hynninen, Kaludi Kaludow, Jaakko Kortekangas, Jaakko Ryhänen, Matti Salminen and Gabriel Suovanen.
